Peace Collections Missing Persons and the Search for Truth

We recognise the families of the missing, investigators, forensic experts, and activists who persist in the search for those who disappeared during the conflicts of the 1990s. Their work represents an ongoing struggle for truth, dignity, and the right to remembrance.

“Missing Persons and the Search for Truth” is a collection dedicated to uncovering the stories of those who were killed during the wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region, as well as the enduring efforts to locate, identify, and honor them. Through personal testimonies, field documentation, and visual storytelling, this collection sheds light on the human impact of disappearance and the long road toward closure and justice.

The stories presented in this collection emerge from different sites of memory across the region, where the absence of the missing continues to shape families, communities, and collective memory. They highlight not only the pain of loss, but also the resilience of those who refuse to give up the search and who advocate for truth and accountability.

The first exhibit “Perućac” stands at the center of this collection. In 2010, during fieldwork at Lake Perućac, when the water level of the reservoir behind the hydroelectric dam was lowered, the remains of numerous Bosniak civilians killed in the 1992 Višegrad massacres were uncovered. This moment revealed both the scale of loss and the years-long concealment of evidence. During this fieldwork, the PCRC team met photographer Velija Hasanbegović, whose work would become essential in documenting the process of recovery and remembrance.
